Description
Considering Growing Mushrooms at Home?
These fully hydrated grains come sealed in a 3T filter bag with a self-healing injector port. You don’t need a flow hood or even a still air box – just inject your spore syringe or live liquid culture directly into the bag. Once the grains colonize, you’re ready to grow mushrooms at home.
How to Use Sterile Grains (With Still Air Box)
Note: While you can use these bags without a flow hood or Still Air Box (SAB), we strongly recommend using at least a SAB. It only takes one airborne spore to land on the injector port or needle and contaminate your bag.
ps. Don’t have a Still Air Box? here is an excellent instructional video on how to make one.
Preparing the Bag and Syringe
- Inspect the grains before use. Look for wet spots, discoloration, or any damage to the bag. Contact us if you see anything concerning.
- Place the bag, syringe needle in your Still Air Box
- Sanitize the bag, especially the injector port, using rubbing alcohol or Dettol.
- Loosen the spores if using a multi-spore syringe. Tap it gently against a table edge to separate the clumped spores. This may take some time.
- Check your liquid culture (LC):
- Use only LC that’s a few months old or less, stored cold and dark.
- Avoid LC with:
- Cloudy liquid
- Small white dots inside the mycelium
- A mycelial mat or “crust” that doesn’t move when shaken
Injecting the Bag
- Use a sterile needle, preferably factory-sealed. If unsure, flame-sterilize the needle tip until red hot, then let it cool and keep within the Still Air Box
- Clean the injector port again before injecting. Use no more than 10cc per liter of grain—more can lead to oversaturation and contamination.
Incubation
Incubate the grains at the temperature recommended for your mushroom species. Once fully colonized, you’re ready to fruit your mushrooms!
